The Compassion of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I ought to seek a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
